Earthquake simulation on our last day

 Monday, January 20, 2020

It was our last day in Mexico City, but our flight didn't depart until 305pm so we had some time to play.

We'd been seeing signs all over the hotel about a nation-wide "Macrosimilacro" which would simulate a massive earthquake to help everyone be ready for a real event.

We started our day by having breakfast at El Cardenal, along with a few hundred other people. Boy that place stays busy! And with good reason--it's always excellent.

Afterwards, we walked from the hotel through Alameda Park, past the Metro by the Palacio de las Bellas Artes, down Avenida Hidalgo.

A few Jacarandas were blooming

This is where we heard the Macrosimilacro sirens (11am) and saw people in office buildings evacuating, in a very orderly manner. Over by the Museo National de Arte, several groups were lined up and we stopped to watch for awhile. It seemed to be taken very seriously.

We made our way back to the hotel along Avenida Juarez, noting that traffic was stopped while the office workers evacuated. The Macrosimilacro started at 11am and was still going at 1130am. I'm not sure when it "ended."

We finished our packing, checked out, called Uber, and were at the airport a couple of hours before our departure.

We had time to do a little Duty Free shopping and then boarded for home.

We had a great time and looked forward to our next trip, in July 2020.

Next: Paris in May 2020
