Centro Historico sights

 Saturday, January 18, 2020

Restaurante Nico's--abut which I'd read really great things--was not open late. So we reserved the latest time possible, 5pm, and planned our day around that.

We decided to stay in the Centro Historico, after all there is lots to do and see right there!

Our first stop was Plaza Gabriel Garcia Marquez which was so peaceful and pretty.

Next up was the Templo Expiatorio National San Felipe de Jesus.

Then, right next door, the Temple de San Francisco (which we'd seen one evening, on our second trip).

Photo op with Casa de los Azulejos

As many times as we've wandered down Avenida Francisco I Madero, we'd never noticed the Palacio de Iturbide's doors being open. Well, today they were open and having a free exhibit of the Great Masters of Mexican Popular Art. In we went and were delighted.

The mansion itself was beautiful and the art displayed was interesting, intricate, colorful, and (mostly) beautiful.

Husband spied a beautiful dark blue pineapple jar by Hilario Alejos Madrigal which we had to have! They wrapped it carefully and held it for us until we came back several hours later.

Continuing down Madero, our next stop was at Iglesia San Felipe Neri.

We walked through busy streets lined with interesting old buildings to Iglesia Nuestra Senora del Pilar "La Ensenanza."

Iglesia Nuestra Senora del Pilar "La Ensenanza" was hidden away between buildings but really pretty inside.

Back out on the streets making our way to Plaza Santo Domingo.

At Plaza Santo Domingo we were treated to a little military marching. We walked about Iglesia Santo Domingo.

We then worked our way back to the Palacio de Iturbide to pick up our jar. It was time to get ready for dinner.

Nico's is reportedly not in a great neighborhood (maybe why they close early?) but Uber got us there, no problem. The hostess acknowledged our reservation but seemed unprepared for us. They ended up seating us at a round table kind of in the middle of the restaurant. It was busy all around us.

However, the service was attentive, the drinks were delicious, the food was fabulous (although I got a boring chicken), and the guacamole and caesar salads made tableside provided entertainment. We definitely enjoyed this experience and would return again!

It had started to rain a little but our Uber came right away to whisk up to Arena Coloseo for Lucha Libre. We experienced these "fights" on our second trip and enjoyed the experience enough to want to see it again.

Well, even though our seats were not as good (we got there quite a bit later than the first time), the spectacle was every bit as entertaining as the first time. The crowds around us were really into things, too, eating ramen noodles, drinking, cheering. Lucha Libre is a cheap, fun thing to do!

We walked over to Tio Pepe's for a last nightcap of the trip before crashing. (They're closed on Sundays)

What a great day in Mexico City!

Next: Modern Art
